Our History

The late Jesse and Merle Ruth Cranford Jr. are the founders and builders of Prayer Chapel Church of God in Christ.  While living in San Francisco CA. the Lord called them to do a work. They moved their family to Detroit and after much fasting and praying, the Prayer Chapel Church of God in Christ opened it's doors on December 18, 1971 at 4875 24th Street with five members. In March 1974 Pastor Cranford Jr. desired more comfort for his parishioners. By faith he purchased a building located at 15048-50 Schaefer and moved on April 18, 1974. Further expansion became necessary, so ground was broken for our current location in September 1988 and the Prayer Chapel family moved in on April 28, 1989. Our present pastor, Superintendent Jesse Cranford III, was appointed to the pastorate by the late Bishop C.L. Anderson, Jr. on July 13, 1999. He continues to build on the "Legacy of Leadership" and "Godliness" exemplified in Pastor Cranford Jr. and under his leadership a new sanctuary was completed in March 2005.
