On behalf of our caring church and friends – Welcome to Prayer Chapel Church

Prayer Chapel is a vibrant congregation in Detroit, Michigan. We have a strong tradition of worship, music, arts, programs for children, family enrichment, outreach, missions projects, and answering the hard questions about important issues.

Ours is a welcoming congregation and a diverse witness to God’s love through Jesus Christ. We are passionate about spiritual growth, service and learning from each other.

We would like to personally invite you to come join us for one of our services. The atmosphere is relaxed and the messages are relevant to your daily life. Through meaningful Bible-preaching and teaching, and incredible worship, our goal is to help you grow deeper in your relationship with God each and every week.

These are exciting days at Prayer Chapel! We hope you’ll join us.

Many blessings,

Our History

The late Jesse and Merle Ruth Cranford Jr. are the founders and builders of Prayer Chapel Church of God in Christ.  While living in San Francisco CA. the Lord called them to do a work. They moved their family to Detroit and after much fasting and praying, the Prayer Chapel Church of God in Christ opened it's doors on December 18, 1971 at 4875 24th Street with five members. In March 1974 Pastor Cranford Jr. desired more comfort for his parishioners. By faith he purchased a building located at 15048-50 Schaefer and moved on April 18, 1974.

Further expansion became necessary, so ground was broken for our current location in September 1988 and the Prayer Chapel family moved in on April 28, 1989. Our present pastor, Superintendent Jesse Cranford III, was appointed to the pastorate by the late Bishop C.L. Anderson, Jr. on July 13, 1999. He continues to build on the "Legacy of Leadership" and "Godliness" exemplified in Pastor Cranford Jr. and under his leadership a new sanctuary was completed in March 2005.
